FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: February 19, 1998 Contact: Jim Koehler or Grace Stanton GD&A Public Relations (303) 447-1190 DrGStanton@aol.com New Display Server Ends Frustration For Corporate Laptop Users Accelerated-X The Key To Superior UNIX®/Linux Laptop Performance, Company Claims Denver--As laptop and notebook PCs become more prevalent in corporations, so has user frustration. The lack of graphics driver support for UNIX®/Linux operating systems among the latest laptop models is the primary reason, followed by sluggish performance and limited graphical resolution. Xi Graphics has solved these problems with a new version of X servers designed specifically for laptops. The Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server enables PC laptop users running Linux, FreeBSD, and some UNIX® systems to utilize workstation-class features--such as multiple visuals-- while maintaining exceptionally high display performance. Support is currently available for a number of today's most popular laptop/notebook machines from leading manufacturers, with additional models added to the "available" list monthly. Because laptop and notebook PCs do not utilize standard graphic chipsets used on plug-in graphics boards for desktop computers, difficulties can be encountered by users setting up and running their operating systems on laptops. The frustration of inadequate driver support is increased by the amount of time the user is required to "hunt down" and implement fixes on a trial-and-error basis. Xi Graphics' Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server provides a quick and easy solution and delivers the added benefit of enhanced graphical performance. It is the only solution to a number of graphics-related problems, such as hardware support, color correction, and sluggish performance. The Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server boasts capabilities and performance well beyond the X server that comes standard with most systems, or that is freely available on the Internet. "The X display servers that came with my Red Hat Linux wouldn't run graphics on my laptop, which has a NeoMagic Chipset," commented Kim Johnson of Graham Construction & Engineering. "The NeoMagic web site steered me in the direction of the Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server, which immediately solved the problem." Another user, Lee Hetherington of MIT, was dissatisfied with the performance of a "free" server on his new IBM ThinkPad 770. "There was little speed, and no accelerated support for the Trident Cyber 9397. That's why I turned to Xi Graphics. They were the first to support the 770 at accelerated speeds. We now plan to purchase additional copies for our department." Matthew Harrell of SAIC, the technology wing of the New York Stock Exchange, also found Xi Graphics server to be an impressive solution: "It was easy to install, the picture is rock solid, and technical support is quite helpful. I was able to get it working perfectly in just a couple of minutes." Like its desktop sibling, the Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server PseudoColor (16 & 256 colors), HighColor (32768 & 65536 colors), and TrueColor (16.7 million colors) modes, can handle displays far larger than currently available on even the newest laptops, has Hot Keys for on-the-fly switching of display resolution, and is fully compatible with the native X Window System and the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). It has also achieved exceptionally high Xmark and xStone ratings. The Laptop Accelerated-XTM Display Server lists for $199.95 and may be ordered direct from Xi Graphics.
